My Initial Open Water Training

Back in 1991, my friend Mike and I used to regularly go down the local swimming pool and swim 100 lengths during our lunch hour. One day I saw an advert for scuba training school called Discover Scuba.

“I’ve always fancied doing that” I told Mike, reflecting back on the inspiration Jacques Cousteau had given me as a child through his wonderful adverntures on the Calypso.

We phoned Chris, the Instructor, and arranged a trial lesson. One of Chris’ Divemasters called Lee took us for the trial. It was great. I loved it and have never looked back. 6 weeks later I had finished my Open Water confined water training.

6 weeks later Mike and I went for a long weekend in Malta to do the qualifying dives. It makes me shudder now to think back as to how little I knew of what I was letting myself in for. £400 lighter I returned a qualified diver.

Upon my return Chris asked Mike and I if we’d like to get involved in helping him down the pool. We jumped at the chance and this marked the beginning of my dive training career which was crowned a few years ago when I finally decided to become an Instructor
